What Don’t We Know?

We have heard too many rumors about you;
About how you truly exist – but not in Lagos
For in Lagos, it is an exception to possess you
And those who possess you lose you soon enough
Dear sanity, what don’t we know?

We have heard too many rumors about you;
About how you are a virtue which cannot be bought
But this your priceless nature seems to make you very scarce
Because we can’t find you in the marketplace
With cross-eyed merchants and unequal scales
Dear honesty, what don’t we know?

We have heard too many rumors about you;
About how you never roll in the mud
Clean and saintly, you remain true to yourself
Yet, we don’t see you in our government
Apparently, the wealthiest people are enjoy to bathe in mud
Dear integrity, what don’t we know?

We have heard too many rumors about you;
You’re blind, yet your discretion is close to perfection
You are emotionless, yet your determination isalways for the common good
But in your blindness you have appointed those with the eyes of ants
For they only pursue the sweet taste of their own desires
And in your emotionlessness, you have appointed humans
Do you not know that even the soft wind can blow their convictions off their chests?
Dear Justice, what don’t we know?

Oh, we have heard too many rumors about you;
That if we sing and you’re not acknowledge then our songs are incomplete
If we write and you don’t feature, our writing is largely inadequate.
And if we live and don’t seek you, then we are the devil.
But even as strong and as powerful as the rumors make you seem,
You have stood by while others wrought evil in your name.
And as true as they say you are,
You have watched on as others lied in your name.
And as absolute as they have made you seem,
Many blame you for the emptiness in their hearts.
Dear love, what don’t we know?

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
